New Workshop, New Energy – Big Red Grain at Among The Trees

Big Red Grain has a new home—and it couldn’t be a better fit.

I’ve recently moved into a shared workshop space at Among The Trees in Marrickville, and let me tell you—it’s got soul. There’s something about being surrounded by other makers, the smell of fresh-cut timber in the air, and the hum of sanding machines and conversations that makes the craft feel even more alive. It’s a place that celebrates the beauty of timber, community, and creating with intention.

This space gives me the room (and inspiration) to work on some of the most beautiful commissioned boards I’ve ever made. Right now, I’m deep in a batch of custom butcher blocks crafted from a mix of reclaimed native hardwoods—each one a statement piece, full of character and built to last a lifetime.

You can see in the latest boards—the grain patterns glow, the edges are softened just enough, and the hand-rubbed oil finish brings everything to life. They’re tactile, weighty, and unapologetically bold. The kind of board you don’t tuck away in a drawer.

What I love most is that each board tells a story. Not just of the timber’s past life, but of the people it’s made for. Whether it’s a housewarming gift, a centrepiece for dinner parties, or a quiet daily companion in the kitchen—there’s purpose in every groove and corner.

If you’re local to Marrickville and want to drop by for a look (or chat timber, finishes, and edge profiles), get in touch. Or if you’ve been thinking about a custom board for yourself or someone special, now’s a great time to commission something unique.

From the heart of Marrickville to your bench top—with grain, grit, and a bit of sawdust still on my boots.

Cheers,

Kevin
